Outdoor season
May through October
Indoor season
Year-round, critical November through April

Des Moines has a humid continental climate with hot humid summers and cold snowy winters. Reliable outdoor play runs May through October with peak conditions in late spring and early fall (60s-80s). Winter is long and cold November through April with frequent snow and sub-freezing temperatures, shutting down outdoor play. Spring brings strong tornado and severe weather risk April-June. The dedicated indoor footprint at Dinks Pickleball (13 indoor), Smash Park (6 indoor + 2 outdoor), Life Time West Des Moines, Pioneer Columbus Rec Center (4 indoor), and Valley Community Center provides essential year-round coverage. Des Moines is the host city for the 2026 National Senior Games, which means major pickleball investment and tournament activity.

Des Moines’s pickleball scene has built up an impressive footprint for a metro of about 700,000, with major investment around the 2026 National Senior Games which Des Moines is hosting (the biennial multi-sport event for athletes age 50+ that draws 12,000+ competitors and has pickleball as a marquee sport). The dedicated indoor flagship is Dinks Pickleball at 3800 Merle Hay Rd (located inside Merle Hay Mall), with 13 professional dedicated indoor courts open daily 6am-12am. Dinks is the largest dedicated pickleball venue, indoor or outdoor, in central Iowa. Reservations run through CourtReserve with 2-hour minimums, ball machine rentals available, and PPR-certified pros David and Bailey Lanning offering instruction. Smash Park West Des Moines is one of the original eatertainment pickleball venues in the region with 6 indoor + 2 outdoor courts, food and drinks, $5 all-day open play, and guaranteed Open Play availability throughout the day.

The free public outdoor scene took a major step forward in Spring 2025 with the opening of the Rally Complex in Ankeny (725 SW Prairie Trail Pkwy), 12 stand-alone lighted dedicated outdoor pickleball courts open daily dawn to 10:30pm with a park shelter and restrooms. The City of Des Moines Parks & Recreation runs official drop-in pickleball at Pioneer Columbus Recreation Center (2100 SE 5th St, 3-4 indoor courts, $2 drop-in, Mon-Fri 8am-noon) and 4-Mile Community Center, plus Birdland Sports Complex (2 outdoor). Valley Community Center in West Des Moines runs open play three days a week with beginner through intermediate training programs. Suburban free public venues include Walker Johnston Park in Urbandale (4 dedicated outdoor), Ironwood Park in Altoona (4 dedicated outdoor), Campbell Recreation Area in Clive, and Woodland Hills Park in West Des Moines. Premium private indoor options include Life Time West Des Moines (6625 Coachlight Dr) and Harvest Pickleball.

The Des Moines Metro Pickleball (DMMP) Club at dmmp.club is the central community organizing body, while Pickleball Iowa (pickleballiowa.com) run by longtime ambassador Steve Stone provides statewide programming context. Tournament-wise, Des Moines is currently in the unique position of preparing for the 2026 National Senior Games, which will draw the country’s largest concentration of competitive 50+ pickleball players to the city. Outside that signature event, Dinks Pickleball runs the most consistent indoor amateur tournament calendar, Smash Park hosts social tournaments, and the USA Pickleball Midwest Regional rotates through Iowa venues. For visitors, the combination of Dinks’s serious 13-court indoor footprint, Smash Park’s eatertainment format, and Rally Complex’s free outdoor scale makes Des Moines a credible regional pickleball destination - and the 2026 National Senior Games gives it temporary national prominence.
