The free public outdoor scene took a major step forward in Spring 2025 with the opening of the Rally Complex in Ankeny (725 SW Prairie Trail Pkwy), 12 stand-alone lighted dedicated outdoor pickleball courts open daily dawn to 10:30pm with a park shelter and restrooms. The City of Des Moines Parks & Recreation runs official drop-in pickleball at Pioneer Columbus Recreation Center (2100 SE 5th St, 3-4 indoor courts, $2 drop-in, Mon-Fri 8am-noon) and 4-Mile Community Center, plus Birdland Sports Complex (2 outdoor). Valley Community Center in West Des Moines runs open play three days a week with beginner through intermediate training programs.
