Pickleball in Cheyenne.

Cheyenne is the highest state capital in the US at 6,062 ft elevation, and its pickleball scene was transformed in early 2025 when The Picklr Cheyenne opened in the former Big Lots at 3741 E. Lincolnway. The 22,000 sq ft facility brings 8 dedicated indoor courts with outdoor-style surfacing, pro shop, private event space, grab-and-go refreshments, and full programming (court reservations, drills, league play, clinics, tournaments, open play). Open Sun-Sat 6am-11pm. The franchise is operated by Laramie County residents Ray and Tanya Estes, both U.S. Army veterans (Tanya retired with the Legion of Merit medal). Ray is a competitive 4.5-rated player who was previously driving 75 minutes each way to play at The Picklr Loveland in Colorado before opening the Cheyenne facility. Before The Picklr arrived, Wyoming’s first state capital had very limited dedicated indoor capacity.

The free public outdoor scene is anchored by Lions Park with 8 painted dedicated courts near Bain Elementary School. Permanent courts with portable nets stored on site, morning and afternoon play, good 3.0-4.0 level groups. Cheyenne Country Club has 4 dedicated outdoor courts (resurfaced 2019) for members with organized play Mon/Wed/Fri 7-9am and Tue/Thu 5-7pm. Laramie County Community College opens up significant capacity with 4 indoor hardwood courts + 1 outdoor concrete + 6 outdoor courts recently built and open to the public Mon/Wed/Fri 6-9:30am. Kiwanis Community House runs City of Cheyenne Recreation Division’s drop-in pickleball ($2.50 with punch card) Mon/Wed 9-11am. South High School has 3 hardwood courts open Tue/Thu nights 7-9pm.

The realities of Cheyenne weather demand serious indoor capacity: at 6,062 ft elevation in the high plains, outdoor pickleball is essentially limited to June through September. Wyoming wind is a major year-round factor (Cheyenne is one of the windiest cities in the US), and the thin altitude air affects ball flight. Winter is long and harsh October through May with sub-freezing temperatures, snow, and intense wind chill that makes indoor venues mandatory for 8+ months of the year.

Tournament-wise, The Picklr Cheyenne runs the most consistent indoor competitive amateur calendar (including the chain’s flagship Picklr Open), the City of Cheyenne Recreation Outdoor Summer League runs June-August, and the USA Pickleball Mountain Regional rotates through Wyoming venues annually. For visitors, Cheyenne is the practical pickleball stopover for road trips between Denver (already a Dinkin city, about 1.5 hours south) and points north into Montana - or as a brief detour during Cheyenne Frontier Days (the famous July rodeo).
