Pickleball in Charleston.

Charleston is West Virginia’s pickleball anchor, with a scene shaped by one major private facility and a dedicated community-led nonprofit club. The marquee venue is Charleston Tennis Club, West Virginia’s premier racquet sports destination on 25 acres with a remarkable 16 dedicated pickleball courts (6 indoor + 10 outdoor) alongside 11 outdoor tennis courts, indoor tennis, swimming pool, full-service clubhouse restaurant (built 2016), fitness center, and hiking trail. Members get year-round access with lessons from on-staff pros across all ages and skill levels. Non-members can play as guests. Hours Mon-Fri 8am-9pm, Sat-Sun 8am-6pm.

The community-side anchor is the Charleston Pickleball Club (charlestonpickleballclub.com), a USAP-affiliated 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2022 by local pickleball enthusiasts. The club’s home court has 4 dedicated outdoor courts + 1 practice court in South Charleston, plus indoor play partnerships with North Charleston Community Center, Roosevelt Neighborhood Center, and Kanawha City Community Center. This is the organized organizing body that runs round-robins, leagues, and community tournaments across the metro.

The free public outdoor scene runs through City of Charleston Parks & Recreation with Coonskin Park (Kanawha County) having dedicated lighted outdoor courts, plus Cato Park with dedicated courts and Magic Island with tennis-converted courts in downtown Charleston. The YMCA of Kanawha Valley runs indoor pickleball for members. South Charleston Community Center adds suburban indoor coverage. Premium private outdoor options include Edgewood Country Club (4 dedicated outdoor) and Berry Hills Country Club (2 dedicated outdoor).

Tournament-wise, the Charleston Pickleball Club organizes the community competitive calendar across multiple venues, Charleston Tennis Club hosts member tournaments, and the USA Pickleball Mid-Atlantic Regional rotates through WV venues annually. West Virginia’s pickleball scene is smaller than peer Southern state capitals like Little Rock or Birmingham, but the combination of Charleston Tennis Club’s serious 16-court dedicated facility and the Charleston Pickleball Club’s organized community programming makes the metro a credible Appalachian pickleball anchor. For travel pairings, Charleston is roughly 3 hours from Pittsburgh (already a Dinkin city) and Cincinnati (already a Dinkin city), and about 5 hours from Washington DC (already a Dinkin city).
