Seattle is the birthplace of pickleball: invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island by three dads with bored kids. The Founders Courts at Battle Point Park honor the origin, Green Lake is the city's outdoor hub, and Picklewood Paddle Club just opened in SoDo.
Seattle's pickleball calendar is shaped by the rain. The peak outdoor season runs May through October when the dry, mild weather makes the city's free public courts genuinely excellent. November through April brings the long Seattle wet season, and the indoor scene takes over. The city has been steadily building dedicated indoor capacity to handle this: Picklewood Paddle Club opened in SoDo with chef Ethan Stowell behind the kitchen, The Picklr Fremont opened late 2025, and Pickle at the Palms in Interbay is coming online. The city is also planning a large pickleball complex near Magnuson Park for late 2026. Pickleball is Washington's official state sport, which feels right given the game was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum.
Seattle has a unique claim in pickleball: the sport was invented here. Three dads on Bainbridge Island (Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum) made up the game in 1965 to entertain bored kids with ping-pong paddles, a perforated plastic ball, and a badminton net set low. The story made the rounds, the game spread, and decades later pickleball is Washington’s official state sport. The original court still exists, and the Founders Courts at Battle Point Park on Bainbridge are now the pilgrimage destination: six dedicated outdoor courts about 35 minutes from downtown Seattle by ferry and short drive, with gear rentals on-site and weekday morning open play hosted by Bainbridge Island Pickleball.
In the city itself, Green Lake Park is the de facto headquarters with 8 outdoor courts plus 2 indoor courts at East Green Lake Park. Skill-based paddle-stacking, year-round play (weather permitting outdoors), and a community that runs from early-morning regulars to after-work leagues. Around the metro, St. Edward State Park in Kenmore has indoor and outdoor courts in a forest setting near Lake Washington. Shoreline Davis Park has 6 free outdoor courts north of the city. Magnolia and Westcrest add more public options. Seattle Parks & Rec also runs indoor drop-in pickleball at multiple community centers (Miller, Rainier, others) which becomes critical during the long wet season.
The dedicated club scene is finally arriving. Picklewood Paddle Club opened in SoDo as a full pickleball-meets-dining destination with chef Ethan Stowell behind the kitchen. The Picklr opened a Fremont location in late 2025, the franchise’s first Seattle club. Pickle at the Palms in Interbay is coming online. Seattle Parks is also planning a large dedicated pickleball complex near Magnuson Park for late 2026. None of this existed three years ago. Tournament-wise, the Seattle Metro Pickleball Classic is the major regional amateur event, and Bainbridge Island Pickleball runs the Founders Tournament at Battle Point each year, which carries some real symbolic weight as a competition on the courts where the sport began.
