Houston's pickleball scene is sprawling and indoor-led. PALA in Spring (19 courts) is the largest in Texas, Elite Pickleball Club has 24 courts in the Heights, and the PPA Challenger comes through Atascocita every February.
Houston runs an outdoor pickleball season most of the year, but June through September is brutal: high heat, oppressive humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Most serious players shift entirely indoors during summer. Houston has built more dedicated indoor pickleball capacity than almost any city in the country to handle this: PALA Pickleball in Spring has 19 courts, Elite Pickleball Club has 24 in the Heights and another 14 at Clear Lake, and Pickleball Social, Solarium, Drop Shots, and Pickle Lab all run climate-controlled indoor courts. Outdoor scene is best from October through May, with early morning and evening play recommended in the shoulder months. Lightning safety matters here too: stop play and wait 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before resuming.
Houston is one of the biggest pickleball markets in the country, with over 100 venues spread across the metro and more than 200 outdoor courts on public record. The texture of the scene is a little different from most cities though, because Houston’s weather pushes a lot of play indoors. The best dedicated indoor facilities in Texas live here. PALA Pickleball in Spring has 19 courts (11 indoor, 8 outdoor) and bills itself as the third-largest pickleball facility in the country. Elite Pickleball Club runs 24 indoor courts at its Heights flagship and another 14 at Clear Lake, with The Woodlands location on the way. Pickleball Social, Solarium in Midtown, Drop Shots in the Houston Farmers Market, and Pickle Lab all add climate-controlled options aimed at different vibes.
The public outdoor scene is real too. Memorial Park Tennis Center is the central hub, with lighted dedicated courts and a competitive player base from beginner up to 4.5+. Bay Area Park in the Clear Lake area runs 8 free lighted courts. Briar Grove and a long list of neighborhood parks fill in around them, with Houston Parks & Rec maintaining a current list of indoor community-center open play sessions for summer storm season. East River 9 / Riverhouse adds 6 outdoor courts inside a restaurant-and-golf development, which is the Houston version of the food-and-pickleball trend.
The biggest event on the local calendar is the Houston PPA Challenger every February at Life Time Kingwood in Atascocita. The APP Next tour stops in Houston in late May. Outside the pro calendar, PALA, Elite, and Pickleball Social all run their own tournament series throughout the year, and the Houston Pickleball Association maintains a community calendar that’s worth checking before any given weekend. Lightning safety matters here for the same reason it does in Tampa: if you hear thunder, leave the court and wait 30 minutes after the last clap before going back.
This is a working guide to where to play and what’s on the calendar. If you spot something wrong or out of date, send a note to letsplay@dinkin.app and it lands in our inbox.
