Outdoor season
April through October
Indoor season
Year-round, critical November through March

Pittsburgh has a real four-season climate that shapes the pickleball calendar. Reliable outdoor play runs April through October with peak conditions in late spring and early fall. Summer brings warm-and-humid afternoons (highs in the mid-80s) with regular thunderstorms. November through March brings cold, wind, and snow that closes outdoor courts entirely for stretches. The indoor scene is unusually deep for the city's size: The Pickleball Warehouse (19 indoor courts, the city's largest), Pickleball Harbor (dedicated acrylic with championship courts), UPMC Passavant Sportsplex (6 domed courts in winter on top of 13+ outdoor), AHN Sports Complex at Cool Springs (6 indoor), plus the JCC and CitiParks rec center programming. Outdoor courts at Washington's Landing and Verona Riverbank Park were recently renovated.

Pittsburgh has built a pickleball scene that punches well above the city’s size, anchored by both an unusually strong club community and the city’s identity as the home of Gamma Sports (the paddle and ball manufacturer). The Steel City has earned the unofficial nickname “Picklesburgh” from Visit Pittsburgh, and the calendar reflects it. UPMC Passavant Sportsplex at Graham Park in Cranberry Township is the regional anchor: 19 dedicated outdoor pickleball courts with 6 covered by a dome for winter play, managed by the Cranberry Township Pickleball Association with 1,900+ members and a full calendar of events. CTPA hosted the USA Pickleball Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship in 2025 at the facility. Cranberry Township residents get free access to 3 courts daily even without CTPA membership.

The indoor scene is the deepest part of the city, which makes sense given the Pittsburgh winter. The Pickleball Warehouse is the largest with 19 indoor courts, an open-play system, a pro shop, and tournament space. Pickleball Harbor offers premium dedicated acrylic surfaces with USA Pickleball’s official court partner, 2 championship-sized courts (34’x60’), DUPR rating integration, and a polished member experience. AHN Sports Complex at Cool Springs in Bethel Park adds 6 indoor courts alongside its mini golf, batting cages, and other amenities (the complex is a 40+ year Pittsburgh staple revitalized after a 2013 fire). The Jewish Community Center, CitiParks Rec Centers (Arlington, Brookline, Phillips, West Penn, Magee), Hampton Community Center, Lauri Ann West, Robinson Township, and Greentree Sports Complex round out the indoor options.

For free public outdoor play, Washington’s Landing on Herr’s Island has 10 recently-renovated dedicated courts (take the 30th St. Bridge from Troy Hill). North Park has 8 outdoor courts in the North Hills. Schenley Oval Sportsplex has 4 in Schenley Park with a queuing system. Verona Riverbank Park has 4 state-of-the-art outdoor courts (courts 3-4 are reservable via app). Frick Park has 3 behind the Blue Slide Playground. Aspinwall Recreational Area has 2 (with 4 more coming). The marquee tournament is the Gamma Pickleball Classic at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center every September, one of the top tournaments in the country thanks to Gamma’s hometown sponsorship. The PPA Tour doesn’t currently stop in Pittsburgh, but most serious players travel to the Veolia Atlanta Pickleball Championships (PPA Slam) or the Veolia PPA National Championships in Cary, NC.

This is a working guide to where to play and what’s on the calendar. If you spot something wrong or out of date, send a note to letsplay@dinkin.app and it lands in our inbox.
