Pine Nursery Park has 16 dedicated public courts as Central Oregon's free anchor. Pickleball Zone Bend brings 8 cushion-court indoor courts with mountain views, Widgi Creek adds 10 indoor, and Sunriver Resort opened an 18-court indoor-outdoor complex in fall 2023.
Bend sits in Central Oregon's high desert at ~3,600 ft elevation with classic four-season weather. Reliable outdoor play runs May through October with peak conditions in summer and early fall (warm days, cool nights, low humidity, 300+ days of sunshine). November through April brings cold and snow that closes outdoor courts. Altitude affects ball flight slightly (faster pace). The Bend pickleball scene built up exceptional dedicated indoor capacity unusually early for a small mountain town because the long off-season demanded it: Pickleball Zone Bend opened in October 2018 as one of the country's first multi-court dedicated indoor pickleball facilities. Sunriver Resort added an 18-court complex in fall 2023. The combination makes Bend a year-round destination.
Bend’s pickleball identity reflects the city’s broader character: a serious outdoor sports town that punches well above its size in dedicated infrastructure. The free public anchor is Pine Nursery Park at 3750 NE Purcell Blvd, with a 16-court dedicated complex run by Bend Parks & Rec. Courts 1-12 are reserved for Bend Pickleball Club organized play during weekday daytime hours (Mon-Sat 9am-3pm winter, 7am-2pm summer); courts 13-16 are always open to the public except during tournaments. 8 of the 16 courts have lighting for evening play. For a city of about 100,000, this is one of the most impressive public pickleball complexes in the country, and the Bend Pickleball Club’s volunteer-driven programming is the most organized way to get into the local scene.
The dedicated indoor scene is what really sets Bend apart. Pickleball Zone Bend at 63040 NE 18th St opened October 2018 as one of the country’s first multi-court dedicated indoor pickleball facilities: 55,000 sq ft, 4 stories, 8 dedicated indoor courts with state-of-the-art cushion surfaces on the 3rd floor, the 11 Peaks Lounge on the 4th floor with views over 11 mountain peaks, a Trampoline Zone Adventure Park on the ground floor, and a full pro shop. Court rentals run $44/hour ($80 for 2 hours, up to 6 players). The Oregon Pickleball Academy runs out of PZB with year-round lessons, IPTPA prep, and CORE (Central Oregon Rating Evaluations). Widgi Creek Pickleball adds 10 indoor courts at the historic golf club 15 minutes southwest, with lessons led by a professional player and a clubhouse lounge for between games ($17-18/person, 2-hour rentals). About 25 minutes south, Sunriver Resort opened an 18-court indoor-outdoor complex in fall 2023 (10 outdoor + 8 indoor) for resort guests.
The wider Central Oregon pickleball scene is layered. Broken Top Club (8 outdoor courts, members-only), Sage Springs Club & Spa in Sunriver (4 indoor), Fort Rock Park in Sunriver (6 outdoor, owners association), and Eagle Crest Resort’s Ridge Sports Center (2 indoor in Redmond) round out the resort/club options. In Redmond, Sam Johnson Park has 8 free dedicated outdoor courts open dawn to dusk, and The Premier Pickleball Club has 9 indoor courts (5 member, 4 public). Smaller public venues at Larkspur, Quail Park, and Ponderosa Park add neighborhood capacity. Tournament-wise, Bend isn’t on the PPA Tour calendar, but the local club and PZB run consistent year-round amateur tournaments, and the USA Pickleball Pacific Northwest Regional rotates through every few years. The combination of one of the best free public complexes in the country, a flagship dedicated indoor facility, and easy access to Sunriver makes Bend an exceptional destination for pickleball-driven travel, especially May through October.
