Scottsdale is a top-five US pickleball city. Cholla and Horizon Parks anchor a strong free public scene, the Boulders has 12 resort courts, and 41-court Arizona Athletic Grounds is 20 minutes south.
Scottsdale is one of the best winter pickleball cities in North America, and fall is when the outdoor season switches back on. September is still hot (highs near 100°F, so play stays at dawn and after 7pm through the month), but by mid-October days settle into sunny 70-85°F and the courts fill up fast. The snowbird influx from November through March makes weekend mornings at Horizon and Cholla very busy; midweek and evening play under lights is the easier get. Summer (June through August) routinely tops 110°F and midday outdoor play is unsafe, which is why dedicated indoor capacity in Scottsdale itself is thin: Valley of the Sun JCC has 2 indoor courts for members, and most players drive 15-30 minutes to Pickleball Kingdom in Chandler, The Pickleball Space in Glendale, or Dink & Dine in Mesa. Harder balls like Franklin X-40 or Dura Fast 40 hold up better than softer ones on hot surfaces in September.
Scottsdale is one of the best pickleball cities in North America for the obvious reason: nine months a year of perfect dry sunshine, plus a built-in active 50+ population that adopted the sport early. The free public scene is genuinely excellent. Horizon Park (10 courts) is the social hub. Cholla Park (8 courts) is the North Scottsdale flagship with great lights and informal round-robins on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Scottsdale Community College has 6 dedicated courts free to the public through a Parks & Rec partnership. Thompson Peak (freshly resurfaced in September 2026), Scottsdale Ranch, Chaparral, and Indian School Park fill in around them, all free or near-free, sunrise to 10:30pm daily.
The resort scene is a big deal in Scottsdale because it’s not in most cities. The Boulders has 12 enhanced pickleball courts and a Pickleball Package with private casitas. Sanctuary Camelback Mountain has 4 courts on its 53-acre desert grounds. ADERO Scottsdale has 6. All three are guest-and-member only, but they’re real options for visitors building a pickleball-focused trip. Dedicated indoor is genuinely limited inside Scottsdale itself: Valley of the Sun JCC has 2 indoor courts for members, and the McDowell Mountain Ranch courts (sometimes advertised as an indoor “Pickleball Zone”) are actually 10 outdoor HOA courts for residents and guests. For real indoor capacity in summer, most players drive 15-30 minutes to Pickleball Kingdom in Chandler (15 courts), The Pickleball Space in Glendale (15), or Dink & Dine in Mesa.
The defining big-tournament fact about Scottsdale is what’s 30 minutes south at Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa: 41 dedicated courts and a 1,800-seat championship stadium that hosts the PPA Carvana Mesa Cup (next: Feb 15-21, 2027), the PPA Veolia Arizona Open (Sept 14-20, 2026), and the APP Arizona Open (Nov 12-15, 2026). The PPA has a multi-year partnership with AAG through 2028. Locally, Scottsdale Parks & Recreation runs adult pickleball leagues year-round, and the Greater Phoenix Pickleball Association coordinates the broader Valley tournament calendar. Summer planning matters here more than almost anywhere: from June through August, plan around dawn and evening play, switch to harder balls that hold up in 110°F heat, and lean on the indoor options when midday courts get genuinely dangerous.

Cholla Park

8 free dedicated outdoor concrete courts with permanent lines and nets in North Scottsdale's desert setting. Sunrise to 10:30pm daily, first-come first-served. Hosts informal round-robin tournaments on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Great lighting makes it a prime evening spot.
Indian School Park & Tennis Center

13 tennis courts at the city's tennis center, with pickleball lines and portable nets available for shared use. Sunrise to 10:30pm daily. One of the largest pickleball-accessible facilities in central Scottsdale, with a friendly community atmosphere and city programming.
Scottsdale Community College Courts

Six dedicated outdoor hard pickleball courts with permanent lines and nets, restrooms, water, and lights. Free drop-in play partnership between Scottsdale Parks & Rec and Scottsdale Community College. Open 6am to 8pm daily, closed on holidays and when SCC pickleball classes are running.
Thompson Peak Park

Three dedicated outdoor courts (plus portable nets) in North Scottsdale, per the city. All courts were closed Aug 17 to Sept 11, 2026 for resurfacing, reopening Sept 12, so expect fresh surfaces this fall. Quieter alternative to Cholla and Horizon, good for drilling and relaxed games. Higher elevation means more wind than valley-floor parks; adjust ball choice accordingly.
Chaparral Park

Free dedicated outdoor courts in a centrally located park with lake views, dog park, and walking trails. Informal games and pick-up sessions, lighted for evening play.
Scottsdale Ranch Park

Six outdoor courts with mountain views: three dedicated courts with permanent nets plus three lined courts with temporary nets on the adjacent basketball court. Considered among the most scenic public pickleball venues in the city. Free, first-come first-served. McDowell Mountain Ranch Community Center Courts

10 outdoor hard courts with permanent lines, nets, and lights at the McDowell Mountain Ranch HOA community center. Residents and their guests only (up to 3 guests per resident), reservations via mmrca.net or (480) 473-0877. Sometimes marketed online as an indoor 'Pickleball Zone'; it is not indoor. Worth knowing if you're staying with someone in the neighborhood.

Open to the public; individual and corporate memberships available.

Second PPA Tour stop at Arizona Athletic Grounds, an Open-tier event worth 1,000 ranking points with amateur brackets alongside the pros. Falls right at the tail end of the hot season, so pro matches run into the evening. Tickets from $25.
APP Arizona Open
Annual, mid-November (2026 edition Nov 12-15, Mesa)
APP Tour event at Arizona Athletic Grounds (previously listed as the APP Mesa Open), $125,000 prize purse. Amateur divisions from 3.0 through pro across age brackets, plus championship court play for spectators. USAP membership required to register.
