Daytona is a pickleball pilgrimage. Pictona at Holly Hill, just north of the city, has 49 dedicated courts, a 1,200-seat championship stadium, and hosts two PPA Tour events a year plus the APP Daytona Beach Open and the US Senior Pickleball Nationals.
Daytona Beach has Florida's standard pickleball climate: year-round outdoor play with November through April as the peak season for both temperature and tournaments. Summer (June-September) is hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms; locals shift to early morning and evening play. Pictona at Holly Hill has 13 covered courts (out of 49 total) which handle most summer storm-day and shade-needed play, plus the 1,200-seat championship stadium is also covered. Lightning safety matters here: stop play and wait 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before resuming. Hurricane season runs June through November and can occasionally close venues for a few days at a time.
Daytona Beach is on the pickleball map for one reason and one reason only, but that reason is enormous: Pictona at Holly Hill. The facility opened as one of the world’s premier pickleball venues, the third-largest in the US, with 49 dedicated courts and a 1,200-seat covered championship stadium. Every court has individual fencing with generous 8-foot sideline runoff and 10-foot baseline runoff, 13 of them are covered (which matters in Florida), and the campus has 800 total parking spaces. Drop-in play starts at $15/day, monthly is $48, and annual membership is $400. The Kitchen restaurant serves courtside, the pro shop has demo paddles, there’s a fitness center and lounges. It’s about 5-10 minutes north of downtown Daytona in Holly Hill, accessible enough from the beach area to function as the daily anchor for the regional scene.
The tournament calendar at Pictona is the busiest at any single facility in the country. The Proton Daytona Beach Open (PPA Tour, formerly Florida Open) runs in November with the full pro field. The APP Daytona Beach Open launches the entire APP Tour calendar every January. The Pictona Challenge in spring draws 600+ players across 41 categories. The Senior Invitational pulls 500+ players 50 and over and is USSP-recognized. The Rookie Rally introduces 2.5 and 3.0 players to tournament play. The Summer Nights Series runs MLP-style team play in evenings June through August to dodge the heat. Pictona also hosts the US Senior Pickleball National Championships and has hosted MLP. Functionally, if you’re in the Daytona Beach area you can almost always find a tournament happening or a clinic to take.
Outside Pictona, the Daytona area has a respectable free public scene mostly south and west. Port Orange has 8 free dedicated outdoor courts with permanent lines and nets. Daytona Beach Shores runs city public courts. The Salvation Army Daytona Beach has the rare free indoor option (2 indoor + 2 outdoor, equipment provided). Embry-Riddle’s campus courts are limited to students and staff. Drive 30-45 minutes west and there’s free outdoor pickleball at DeLand (6 lighted courts) and Sanford (6 courts with skill-level open play). For most visiting and competitive players the answer is just Pictona though: it’s so deep, so well-run, and so close to the beach that the rest of the region’s scene functions mostly as overflow and free-play options for non-tournament weeks.
This is a working guide to where to play and what’s on the calendar. If you spot something wrong or out of date, send a note to letsplay@dinkin.app and it lands in our inbox.
