The Courts Cape Coral, an $11M facility with 32 dedicated pickleball courts that opened in 2024, has put Cape Coral on the pickleball map. It hosts the Zimmer Biomet PPA Cape Coral Open every February and runs a 2,000+ member community.
Cape Coral has classic Southwest Florida pickleball weather: warm year-round, but peak season runs November through April when snowbirds arrive and tournaments fill up. Daytime temperatures sit in the 70s-80s in winter, ideal pickleball conditions. May through October brings hot-and-humid summers (90°F+, high humidity, afternoon thunderstorms). Local players shift to early morning (6-9am) and evening play under the lights. Hurricane season runs June through November and can occasionally close venues. The Cape Coral pickleball calendar peaks with the Zimmer Biomet PPA Cape Coral Open each February, drawing the full PPA pro field including Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns.
Cape Coral put itself on the pickleball map in a single move: The Courts Cape Coral opened in August 2024 as one of the first $11 million projects in the city’s $60 million Park and Recreation GO bond initiative. The facility (formerly Lake Kennedy Racquet Center) has 32 dedicated pickleball courts plus 12 tennis courts, 2,000+ members already, junior programs, summer camp, clinics, leagues, food, pro shop, and full lighting for evening play. It’s open Mon-Sat 7am-9pm and Sun 8am-9pm at 420 SW 2nd Ave. For a city of about 215,000 people, this is among the most ambitious municipal pickleball investments in the country, and it shows: The Courts immediately became the regional anchor for Southwest Florida pickleball.
The free public scene is steady but smaller. Veterans Foundation Park has 6 free dedicated outdoor courts in central Cape Coral, the primary free option run by Cape Coral Parks & Rec. The Pelican Soccer Complex has 4 more free courts. Yacht Club Community Park has tennis courts striped for pickleball on the Caloosahatchee River. Cape Harbour Marina has 2 picturesque waterfront courts. Lake Kennedy Senior Center has 4 outdoor courts that anchor the strong senior pickleball community in the city. About 15 minutes south, Fort Myers Racquet Club adds 10 more dedicated indoor and outdoor courts as a Lee County alternative. Most serious local play happens at The Courts or in coordinated meetups through the Cape Coral Pickleball Association Facebook group.
The tournament calendar is the real draw. The Zimmer Biomet Cape Coral Open (PPA Tour) runs February 9-15 each year at The Courts, drawing Anna Leigh Waters, Ben Johns, Gabe Tardio, and the rest of the top pro field. It’s a 1,000-PPA-Point Open-level event with a Pickleball Camp running alongside for non-competing players. The HOPEN its OPEN fall tournament uses 24 of the 32 courts for a quick-running multi-day amateur event. Pickleball Showdown brings more amateur action with prize money in the 4.5+ open divisions. The USA Pickleball SW Florida Regional rotates through the area. For amateur competitors in particular, Cape Coral has become one of the most accessible places in the country to play in a tournament: a single municipal facility that runs major events year-round at a real-pro-tour-level venue.
