LA's pickleball scene is finally getting dedicated infrastructure. PowerPlay in Carson and Pickle Alley LA in DTLA opened in the last two years, the free public scene runs through Cheviot Hills, Mar Vista, and Plummer Park, and MLP Newport Beach is a 45-minute drive away.
LA's mild Mediterranean climate makes outdoor pickleball viable all 12 months of the year. The westside (Santa Monica, Venice, Mar Vista, West LA) stays in the 60-80°F range almost year-round. The Valley and inland areas (Encino, Glendale, Pasadena) push past 100°F in July-September; locals there shift to early morning and evening play. December through March brings the rainy season with occasional storms; that's when indoor courts at PowerPlay, Pickle Alley, and Pickle Pop carry the load. Demand for courts in LA is famously high relative to supply (LA and NYC are widely cited as the two cities with the highest court-shortage pressure in the country); expect waits at popular free public courts on weekends.
Los Angeles is a massive pickleball market that has, until recently, been built almost entirely on free public courts. The demand has outpaced supply for years: LA and NYC are widely cited as the two cities with the deepest court-shortage pressure in the country. The free public scene is strong though, anchored by Cheviot Hills, Mar Vista, and Westwood on the westside, Plummer Park and West Hollywood Park in WeHo, Memorial Park in Santa Monica, Encino in the Valley, and El Segundo in the South Bay. The LA Department of Rec & Parks runs a citywide pickleball page with the current list of dedicated indoor and outdoor courts.
The dedicated club scene is finally catching up. PowerPlay Pickleball in Carson opened its first nine indoor courts as LA’s first true dedicated club, with phase 2 (21 outdoor courts plus a 2-story clubhouse) targeted for late spring 2026. Pickle Alley LA in the Arts District has 14 dedicated courts (9 indoor, 5 outdoor) and a 2,800 sq ft training gym, locally owned and community-focused. Pickle Pop on the Santa Monica Promenade brings three PPA-approved indoor courts with a full bar to the westside. Santa Monica Pickleball Center adds four dedicated outdoor courts with structured programming. The pace of new dedicated facilities in the metro is accelerating.
Pro tournament action in LA itself is limited, but the Orange County corridor 45 minutes south is a different story. The PPA Newport Beach Open runs in early March at the Newport Beach Tennis & Pickleball Club. MLP Newport Beach is the second round of the 2026 MLP playoffs in mid-August at the same venue. Most serious LA tournament players make those drives. Locally, the LA Mad Drops Minor League Pickleball team runs a five-event qualifier series across Southern California (including PowerPlay in Carson) every March through May, with the finals winners earning official MiLP roster spots.
