Outdoor season
October through April (peak); year-round with summer adjustments
Indoor season
Year-round, critical May through September

Phoenix is one of the best outdoor pickleball cities in the country from October through April, with sunny mid-70s days and packed courts. Summer flips the script: from May through September, midday outdoor play is dangerous and most locals play before 8am or after 7pm to avoid the heat. This is when the indoor market earns its keep. Dedicated indoor facilities like Pickleball Kingdom in Chandler, The Pickleball Space in Glendale, and Dink & Dine in Mesa run full programming through the summer in climate-controlled buildings. UV exposure is intense year-round; SPF 50+ and a hat are non-negotiable for outdoor play. USA Pickleball will eventually build its permanent headquarters in Phoenix, which is expected to be one of the largest training facilities in the world.

Phoenix is a top-five pickleball metro in the country, and the reason is straightforward: 300+ days of sunshine, an active retiree population that adopted the sport early, and a public park system that built dedicated lighted courts faster than most cities. The free public scene is genuinely strong. Pecos Park anchors the south Valley with 16 courts and an active club; Paseo Highlands runs the same playbook in North Phoenix with 6 courts and the Paddle Saddle rotation system. Roadrunner, Telephone Pioneers, GR Herberger, Encanto, and Rose Mofford fill in the rest with 3-4 court lighted complexes scattered across the city, all free and first-come first-served.

The professional-grade venue is Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, about 25 minutes east. Formerly known as Bell Bank Park and Legacy Park, AAG hosts 41 dedicated pickleball courts plus a 1,800-seat championship stadium court, and it has a multi-year partnership with the PPA Tour through 2028. The annual Carvana Mesa Cup is one of the biggest stops on the pro calendar. The indoor market matters most from May through September when daytime outdoor play is genuinely dangerous: Pickleball Kingdom in Chandler (15 courts), The Pickleball Space in Glendale (15), Dink & Dine in Mesa Riverview (10 indoor plus 3 outdoor), and Chicken N Pickle in Glendale handle the heat months. City of Phoenix community centers like Deer Valley and Goelet A.C. Beuf round out the affordable summer indoor options.

USA Pickleball plans to build its permanent headquarters in Phoenix, which will likely become one of the largest training facilities in the world when it opens. Until then, AAG runs the major tournament calendar: the PPA Carvana Mesa Cup in February and the APP Mesa Open (a 2026 USA Pickleball Nationals Qualifier) in November anchor the year, with MLP events and smaller APP showcase tournaments filling the gaps.
